Meade Potato Company is one of the country’s largest growers, packers and distributors of fresh produce to the retail market.  We are situated in Lobinstown, Navan, Co. Meath and currently employ approx. 240 staff directly and over 300 indirectly. Meade Potato Co. offers over 100 different lines of produce of the highest quality in freshness, appearance and taste, delivered by a supply chain that prides itself on its efficiency.


Trainee Buyer

The Trainee Buyer will work closely with the Buying team to build relations with new and existing suppliers, with the goal of expanding sales and market share. The role will involveintroducing new suppliers to meet the current and future needs of the business, while ensuring continuous improvement in terms of cost, quality and delivery, along with considering new product/ service introduction. This role would be a great opportunity for an enthusiastic graduate to start their career in the Fresh Produce industry.


Job Role & Responsibilities

  •          Daily order placement/ purchasing from suppliers
  •          Assisting buyers with sourcing of fresh produce
  •          Building good relationships with new suppliers and maintaining current relationships with suppliers
  •          Manage the supply of potatoes effectively in the short, medium and long term through effective buying, sourcing and supply chain management
  •          Support Buyer in planning and trading of product lines
  •          Monitor stock levels against sales projections and report anomalies to the Buyer
  •          Sales analysis, promotion and marketing strategy
  •          Reviewing competitor’s offerings and price positioning
  •          Liaising with suppliers on a daily basis
  •          Negotiate effectively in terms of product quality, volume, delivery and prise with both suppliers/ customers to increase margins and subsequently profits
  •          Liaising with line leaders on a daily basis to discuss all orders to be processed
  •          Negotiate with suppliers in a fair and responsible way
  • Engage in regular competitor product and price checking
  • Ad-hoc duties as dictated by Buyers and Management


Key Behaviours/ Competencies

  •          Demonstrate a high level of competency and confidence in using IT systems, including the Microsoft Office programs and capacity to learn new programs quickly.
  •          Demonstrate initiative and a flexible approach to issues. 
  •          Ability to work well under pressure, plan and organise workloads to meet deadlines.
  •          Strong reasoning and logical decision making skill
  •          Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  •          Confident negotiation skills
  •          Ability to work in a fast paced environment


Desired Skills and Experience

  •          Business Admin/ Agricultural Science Graduates
  •          Sales experiencewould be an advantage
