Meade Potato Company Family Food & Drink Producer of the Year

Meade Potato Company has won the Energia Family Business Food and Drink Producer of the Year Award in Dublin. The award follows previous recognition for the family farm business in 2018, including the Food and Drink Business Awards for Fresh Produce Company of the Year and Sustainable Factory of the Year.

"Our business is an extension of our family farm and as such, it has many of the strengths derived from a family farm: pride in what we produce; total dedication to the job and an appreciation of teamwork," explains Business Operations Manager Eleanor Meade.

Meade Potato Company, based in Lobinstown, Co. Meath, is a leading grower, packer and distributor of fresh produce to the retail and foodservice sector. Specialising in growing potatoes, carrots and onions from their family farm, they also use their expertise to source the full range of fresh produce.

The company's entry into the foodservice and catering market in 2016 with peeled potatoes for their Prepared Food range has met with success; increased orders have recently necessitated the addition of a new production line.

"Our desire to be as sustainable as possible led us initially to develop our peeled potato line. We're delighted that our peeled potatoes have proven so popular with customers," says Meade.

Sustainability has been a driving force for the company's development. In addition to their Prepared Food Division, their commitment to utilising as much of the potato crop as possible has led them to extract and sell the starch from their potatoes. Other sustainability initiatives include energy, water, packaging and employee and community development measures.

"While we do focus on sustainability and have been recognised for that over the years, it is nice today to receive recognition for our core business of producing food. And we certainly welcome an awards programme like this that celebrates how businesses benefit from a family influence," remarks Meade.

The ceremony which is the first of its kind in Ireland and took place on the 24th May 2019 in the Round Room of the Mansion House, Dublin.
